Yudong Shen learned traditional Asian brush painting at a young age. His experiences in the U.S. have lead to an incredible transformation in both his artwork and life.
Mr. Shen was born in Shenyang, China and developed an affinity towards painting at a very early age. His mother helped foster his passion for art, and at the age of eight, he was sent to study brush painting with a master artist. When he was older, Yudong graduated from the Luxun Academy of Fine Art, a very prestigious art school in China.
In 1999, Mr. Shen moved to Chicago when his wife decided to pursue a Master’s degree in the U.S. Yudong was surprised by the amount of art museums he found in Chicago. He frequented them and drew inspiration from the modern and international works he saw. This prompted a change in his artistic style. His traditional brush painting was infused with modern elements of color, texture, and composition.
Mr. Shen’s artwork has won several awards such as Best of Show in the 2006 National Sumi-e Society of America Annual Show and First Prize in the 2012 Minnesota State Fair Fine Art competition, watercolor category. His work has been featured in China, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. He teaches painting and drawing at his MeiLin Studios. Mr. Shen lives in Shoreview, Minnesota.
