Jan. 12, 2017 Green Card Voices met with 30 immigrant students, and soon-to-be-authors, from LEAP High School in St. Paul. Through a presentation with former Wellstone student (and author in the Minneapolis book), Zaynab Abdi, the students asked questions and calmed their nerves in preparation for the recording later in January.
The students have been preparing to record their narratives for the past semester under the guidance of EL teacher Dr. Amy Hewett-Olatunde. Green Card Voices, in collaboration with Hamline University graduate students, will work with these English Learner (EL) students, who come from thirteen different countries, to create individual online video narratives and written personal essays that will be published in a book in June 2017. This will be the third book of immigrant youth stories published by Green Card Voices since May, 2016.
Based on a successful model used in Minneapolis, MN and Fargo, ND the book will be a vehicle to generate awareness about the immigrant experience. The book will include links to the students’ video narrative, a study guide, and glossary to help teachers use the book as an educational resource when teaching about immigration.
A GREAT RESOURCE FOR ENGLISH AND SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES, ADULT LEARNERS, ‘ENGLISH LEARNER’ CLASSROOMS, AND BOOK CLUBS!
