We’ve published two books featuring high schools from Minnesota: Immigration Stories from St. Paul and Minneapolis High Schools. Although the cities are geographically close, they’re demographically very different, and we knew it was important to create a book for each city’s unique population. St. Paul’s immigrant population is predominantly Asian (especially Hmong and Karen), as opposed to the West African demographics of Minneapolis, which are mostly Oromo, Somali and Ethiopian.

The St. Paul book was created in collaboration with the Minnesota 2015 Teacher of the Year, Dr. Amy Hewett-Olatunde, and her students at an all-immigrant public school in St. Paul. The forward is written by locally renowned Bao Phi, a Vietnamese refugee who won the Caldecott Honor, among many other awards, for the 2017 publication of his book A Different Pond.
